‘Haaaaaave you met’, shines a spotlight on the brewery owners, the brewers, venue managers, the beer pourers, the sales representatives, bottle shop workers and the beer drinkers of the SA craft beer industry. We will discover their inner secrets, find out what gets them out of bed in the morning and we might even unravel some exclusive news along the way. The hard questions have been asked, so you don’t have to. Enjoy!
Have you met Matt Newman? Matt has been involved in the craft beer industry for a good time now, starting with Little Creatures, moving onto 4 Pines before settling at Pirate Life. He is mainly involved with the sales aspect but Matt does tend to make quite a number of appearances at the drinking events too. Matt heads up the SA sales team of their newly formed Pirate Cartel, bringing fresh Pirate Life beers to the drinkers hands. Here is what he had to say about the craft beer industry.
Q1. Who are you and how are you involved in the SA beer industry?
Matty Newman, SA sales guy for Pirate Life Brewing Company. I have been in the industry for 8 years. It’s been great to be involved in this industry for so long (4 Pines and Little Creatures) and now I am loving working for Pirate Life.
Q2. What are some of the great moments you have had whilst being involved in this industry?
I love the Beer community! I have really enjoyed meeting others who are in the industry. I have made some great mates from other breweries and we always have some banter over a pint or many 😉
Q3. Predicting the future, what trends are coming in the near future for beer in Australia?
I think you will start seeing more sours and barrel aged beers etc. going forward. Also I think the “craft” drinker will change, as more and more breweries open more and more, non craft drinkers will explore the many beer options out there. Which is great for the industry and this segment will continue to grow.
Q4. What is your favourite beer style and how did this come to be?
Double IPA’s!!! I guess I have always liked something with flavour when I was younger and it was a natural progression from James Squires Golden Ale to Creatures Pale to more and more flavoursome beers as I got older and then when I found the Pirate Life DIPA, my palette has never been the same since!!!
Q5. Where is one place that you would love to see good beer served?
Adelaide Oval!!! I would love to watch the Crows play drinking locally brewed craft beer!!!
Q6. Do you have any exciting news you can share with me? Maybe about future plans, collaborations or anything new?
Well we (Pirate Life) actually have a Hoppy Lager in tank at the moment, it will come out in January. It will have a lagering time of three months. So I am looking forward to that.
Q7. What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Usually my Labrador, Kobe, jumping on my bed wanting to be fed!!!
Q8. Do you dream about beer? If so, what is your most memorable dream about beer?
I always dream about customers abusing me because I have missed an order.
Q9. What is your favourite season for beer drinking? Why?
All Seasons!!! Honestly I love having a well made beer most nights. I cook at home so it’s a bit of a ritual to open a can and cook with some records playing.
Q10. If you could choose any profession, what would it be? Why?
I am very happy with what I am doing, it’s fun, there is plenty of banter, there are challenges, good amount of variety, I get to drink some great booze, meet some great people and am proud of telling people what I do when they ask.
Selling awesome beer is a great job. It beats selling vacuum cleaners or steak knives 😉
We haven’t featured anyone whose favourite style is the Double IPA before, having said that, I can understand why if you were able to have fresh Pirate Life IIPA everyday. I have found Matt a few times now, sitting at a bar, having a beer and talking to a publican about what beer he can sell them. Thanks Matt for your answers. New Year’s Eve will see Lewis Maschmedt introduced as one of Pirate Life’s brewers and quality control guru.
