A big welcome to Lee Stone and the new kids on the block, Shifty Lizard Brewing Company. Currently brewing his two beers, pale ale and IPA, in his back shed; Shifty Lizard has big plans to upscale and reach a larger audience. The name ‘Shifty Lizard’ comes from Lee’s video game playing days, whilst trying to find an intimidating Call of Duty name. The Shifty Lizard team are currently running a Pozible campaign to assist with the upscale; jump on to the Pozible site and have a look at their rewards later but for now have a look at Lee’s answers.
Q1. Who are you and how are you involved in the SA beer industry?
My name is Lee Stone aka ‘Shifty’. I’m the head beer maker man and founder of Shifty Lizard Brewing Co.
Q2. What are some of the great moments you have had whilst being involved in this industry?
Best day by far was the launch of our first 2 products into the craft beer market. Danny and I worked for almost 2 years to achieve it and the moment we first saw our beers on the shelf at Fudd’s (burger restaurant in Aberfoyle Park) was easily the most satisfactory moment I’ve felt! Especially because Aberfoyle Park had always been our childhood stomping ground.
Q3. Predicting the future, what trends are coming in the near future for beer in Australia?
Well we’ve already seen the introduction of hoppy mid strength ales and personally I think that’s certainly the way forward because even your designated driver gets to have a cheeky one. I also believe that sours are going to trend a lot more in the near future.
Q4. What is your favourite beer style and how did this come to be?
I’m an IPA man. Not just because of the big hop flavours but also based on it’s historical background. It’s funny too because not a lot of people even know how it came to be known as an IPA or what IPA stands for. Just that it’s “hoppier than a pale ale”. I recommend people do their homework because every beer style has a very interesting story behind it.
Q5. Where is one place that you would love to see good beer served?
From behind my Dad’s bar. West End just isn’t cutting it these days.
Q6. Do you have any exciting news you can share with me? Maybe about future plans, collaborations or anything new?
Shifty Lizard is trying to step up to the plate and provide good beer to the rest of Australia. So we’re currently running a crowd funding campaign on pozible.com offering out drinks packages and merch. The aim is to have our products in a lot more great SA venues by May. Great opportunity for people to try our beers whilst supporting local at the same time.
Q7. What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Most of the time it’s because I’m thinking of the fermentation temperatures or the next recipe. As a brewer your brain never stops, especially when you’re in the early stages of building a brewery, or even a business for that matter. Sometimes I’d be lucky if I even get to bed.
Q8. Do you dream about beer? If so, what is your most memorable dream about beer?
When walking out of the brewery is generally the last thing you do before going bed, then yeah….. of course I dream about beer. The last dream I had was when I forgot to lock the doors of the brewery and my brew dog Zeus started inviting people around and serving them beer directly off the tap to the point that we ran out of beer! I was certainly far more impressed that a dog organised a party, than angry that the beer was all gone.
Q9. What is your favourite season for beer drinking? Why?
I love the end of winter when I know that festivals are on the horizon. There’s nothing better than planning all the events you’re going to attend whilst you have money. It doesn’t take many festivals before your plans quickly change because the last couple of festivals had soaked up all your money.
Q10. If you could choose any profession, what would it be? Why?
I’ll tell you in a couple of years when I’ve lost all my hair!
Look out for the Shifty Lizard beers at select locations across Adelaide for now, including two burger restaurants and Sturt Street Cellars to name a few. The dream of his brew dog hosting a sweet party is the first beery dream we have had I think. I wish Lee and his Shifty team the best of luck in the future, don’t forget to have a look at their Pozible campaign and of course try their beer. Thanks Lee.
