EVENT: A Beginners Guide to Brewing

Drinking great beer is quite a fun past time, but making beer whilst drinking beer takes this hobby to a whole new level of enjoyment. That is why I have teamed up with the kind folk at Palais on Hawker, to host ‘A Beginners Guide to Brewing’. An informal style event where I can impart some of my brewing knowledge to those looking at starting at home.

Whilst I am no expert, I have a solid knowledge base to make a decent, drinkable beer at home. I will be walking you through the process from grain crush, mashing, the boil stage, hop additions and finally adding the yeast. I have also enlisted the help of my mate Mark Reed, who also has a solid knowledge base in the home brew area.

We will be brewing a Black IPA on my all in one Grainfather brewing system. The beer will be fermented at home and kegged in a 19L keg. Once the beer is ready for drinking, it will be tapped at Palais on Hawker as a Charity Keg, with all proceeds going to the Australian Refugee Association. The Black IPA recipe uses some high alpha acid hops such as Pacific Jade, Citra, Simcoe and Mosaic. To add to this, I have some fresh Cascade hops to throw in just for good measure.

Palais on Hawker are a beer distribution company that started in 2003. They distribute beer companies such as Japan’s Kiuchi, Canada’s Brasserie Dieu du Ciel and Collective Arts Brewing with the later well known for their artist can designs. The venue itself pours four beers and have a fully loaded fridge of other great craft beers. Drink the beers from the fridge on site or bundle them up and take away.
