Introducing Brenton Rehn from Rehn Bier located in Angaston, Barossa Valley. Brenton along with his wife Robyn, run their brewery from the back shed of their house, using a 100L three vessel system. Their slogan ‘Trade Up To Flavour’ is splashed across their bottles which are sold in bottle shops all through SA and at the local Barossa Markets. Rehn Bier has at least eight beers in their core range, with their Extra Stout being the most awarded; including a gold at the AIBA awards. Take a look at his answers and see what the husband and wife team think of the craft beer industry.

Q1. Who are you and how are you involved in the SA beer industry?

WE are a husband and wife team, and are the owners of a small beer brand/ Brewery REHN BIER located at Angaston in the lovely Barossa Valley.

Q2. What are some of the great moments you have had whilst being involved in this industry?

REHN BIER has been operating for 5 years, and two things stand out for us. 1. Being awarded a gold medal at the 2015 AIBA for our Extra Stout. 2. Meeting customers when we are selling our beer at markets; so great to get feedback and share people’s passion for our craft beer.

Q3. Predicting the future, what trends are coming in the near future for beer in Australia?

Well I don’t do predictions but if you look at what’s happening in the states, then we generally pick up on their trends.

Q4. What is your favourite beer style and how did this come to be?

I like most beer styles, for me it depends on the time of year. Here in South Australia we have quite defined seasons so different beer at different times.

Q5. Where is one place that you would love to see good beer served?

On airplanes.

Q6. Do you have any exciting news you can share with me? Maybe about future plans, collaborations or anything new?

Well we are expanding soon, although this process has been rather drawn out and frustrating. Having said that it is exciting and we are getting closer to our goal of having a cellar door to showcase our beer. Also we have teamed up with Keyneton Hop Garden who had their first commercial crop this year. We have brewed a Wet Hop First Harvest beer, using all Golding hops. We are planning to do an all Chinook version as well.

Q7. What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Beer and the sound Robyn using her hair dryer. Unless I am brewing she is up before I am.

Q8. Do you dream about beer? If so, what is your most memorable dream about beer?

No. What I dream about are some pretty crazy things, and shall remain between me and my subconscious self.

Q9. What is your favourite season for beer drinking? Why?

I like beer all year round. For me there is an ideal brew for every season & we pretty much brew something for every season.

Q10. If you could choose any profession, what would it be? Why?

Brewer, Why? I think that’s pretty obvious.

The more cellar doors in South Australia, the better in my opinion and it will be great to see Rehn Bier able to upscale their production. I am told by a venue in the Barossa, that they go through the Extra Stout at a rapid rate. Key an eye on Brenton and Robyn’s beer label and if you haven’t tried their beers, the Extra Stout is a great starting point. Thanks guys.
