Haaaaaave You Met Dan Treagus, man of many talents at Port Lincoln brewery, Beer Garden? I am told that Dan is a bit of a legend in the home brew scene in Port Lincoln so the natural progression was going to always gravitate towards a full time brewing position. Before starting at Beer Garden, Dan had a very different job; take a look at his answers and learn a little more about Dan.
Q1. Who are you and how are you involved in the SA beer industry?
Dan Treagus –Brewer, Barman, Maintenance guy, Kitchen hand, Barista, and underling at the Beer Garden Brewery in Port Lincoln
Q2. What are some of the great moments you have had whilst being involved in this industry?
Knocking our guest’s beers off our tap list to make room for our expanding range. It was great to have their assistance in kicking off the bar, but we’re getting a bigger kick out of seeing the punters enjoy our creations.
Q3. Predicting the future, what trends are coming in the near future for beer in Australia?
I’d like to see a trend toward drinking local, and bottles becoming mostly an advertising tool. Everyone wants takeaways (me included), but beer’s fresher at the source (and quicker to package!!) Style wise – I think more focus on malt driven ales.
Q4. What is your favourite beer style and how did this come to be?
I can’t choose one – it’s about the mood/food/curiosity. I’m drawn to styles I’ve never tried – whatever broadens my beer horizons.
Q5. Where is one place that you would love to see good beer served?
I’d hate to see anyone miss out, so everywhere I guess.
Q6. Do you have any exciting news you can share with me? Maybe about future plans, collaborations or anything new?
We did a Coffee Stout collaboration with our friends at “Eyre Roasted”. Pints have been selling like hot cakes, and labels should be on bottles very soon.
Q7. What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Builders – We’re living in a shed and getting a house built out the front.
And the cows – if I come home from brew day after dark with the spent grain on the ute, they let me know how hungry they think they are at sunrise.
Q8. Do you dream about beer? If so, what is your most memorable dream about beer?
Not at night, but I daydream about beer all the time. Livin’ the dream!
Q9. What is your favourite season for beer drinking? Why?
I’ll drink beer all year round. Hot/Cold, Day/Night, Rain/Hail/Shine. There’s a beer to complement all situations.
Q10. If you could choose any profession, what would it be? Why?
I spent most of my working life in the fishing industry. The last 10 years on the deck of a prawn boat in the world’s most highly regarded prawn fishery. I got handed the wheel just before Mark & Janie opened the brewery. Great opportunity and a chance to get ahead on our home loan. But the opportunity to be part of a brewery in my home town was too good a lure. So after 2 trips as captain I became captain of our brewhouse! No regrets.
There does seem to be quite a few people working in the craft beer industry that are ‘Livin the dream’. It is great to read about labels on bottles because that means we will be seeing their beer in Adelaide some time soon hopefully. Thanks Dan for your answers, next week is the final Beer Garden member in Janie Butterworth.
